Writing a Series: Plotting and Preparing for Return of the Echoes

Published on 29 October 2024 at 22:03

When I completed Echoes of the Forgotten, I knew the story wasn’t over. Some tales naturally lend themselves to sequels, not just in extending plotlines, but in deepening the themes, characters, and world you’ve already built. The journey of writing a series isn’t just about writing multiple books; it’s about creating continuity, building suspense, and evolving the story. As I embarked on planning the second installment, Return of the Echoes, I realized it would require a unique approach and meticulous preparation to keep readers engaged.

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look into the planning process, from maintaining character consistency to structuring suspense for maximum impact, and how I’m working to ensure that Return of the Echoes brings readers back to the mysterious world of Ash Hollow in an even more gripping way.

1. Knowing Where the Story is Headed

One of the most rewarding aspects of writing a series is being able to lay out a grand narrative arc that stretches across multiple books. I had a general outline of where I wanted the series to go even before finishing Echoes of the Forgotten, but taking time to refine that vision for Return of the Echoes has been essential.

My goal is for each book to build upon the last while offering a self-contained plot that still leaves a few unanswered questions. The overarching story in the series relates closely to the dark secrets of Ash Hollow, particularly the role of the Timekeepers, whose mysterious activities in the town create an eerie, timeless feel. In Return of the Echoes, we’re diving deeper into the history of Ash Hollow, unearthing secrets about long-forgotten experiments and tragedies. I’m mapping out these revelations in a way that will keep readers guessing while ensuring the payoff at the end of each book feels satisfying.

2. Character Consistency and Growth

Writing a series demands a deep commitment to character consistency, especially when it comes to protagonists like Eva and Thomas Blake, who will both return with even more complex roles in Return of the Echoes. I want readers to recognize these characters, not just in name, but in the way they think, act, and grow.

Eva will face new challenges that bring out strengths and vulnerabilities that weren’t apparent in the first book. Thomas, on the other hand, is evolving as a character whose knowledge of Ash Hollow’s dark past is critical. He’s not simply a static “informant” figure but someone with a hidden agenda and a few buried secrets of his own. Developing these nuances in each book means tracking everything from personal quirks to how they interact with the world around them.

I keep detailed notes and reference back to character outlines to ensure continuity. However, I also want to leave room for organic growth, allowing Eva and Thomas to react authentically to the events unfolding around them. By giving each character the freedom to evolve naturally, I’m hoping to keep their arcs fresh and engaging.

3. Balancing Familiarity with New Elements

One of the main challenges in a series is balancing what readers loved about the first book with enough new content to keep them excited. Ash Hollow itself is a central “character” in the series, with its dark, atmospheric streets, shadowed alleys, and an overwhelming sense of mystery.

While Echoes of the Forgotten focused more on the immediate mystery surrounding the Timekeepers, Return of the Echoes will introduce additional layers of Ash Hollow’s history. I want readers to feel as though they’re peeling back layers of the town with each chapter. This means creating new locations, new characters, and new artifacts tied to the town’s lore, all while preserving the eerie atmosphere that was central to the first book.

4. Creating Suspense and Escalating Tension

A core aspect of any good series is maintaining and building suspense across books. In Echoes of the Forgotten, I established a certain level of mystery, but Return of the Echoes needs to up the ante. To achieve this, I’m carefully structuring the suspense so that it doesn’t plateau.

I approach this with a “pyramid” structure: each revelation or suspenseful moment serves as a building block leading to an even more intense climax. In Return of the Echoes, every scene with Thomas or new revelations about Ash Hollow will serve as a stepping stone toward the ultimate secrets of the town. I want readers to feel the stakes rising as the story progresses, leading to a climactic showdown that feels both surprising and inevitable.

5. Setting Similar Chapter Lengths and Pacing

A lesser-known challenge of writing a series is maintaining a consistent pacing and feel. Readers often get used to the rhythm of the first book in a series, and deviating too much from that can be jarring. I pay careful attention to chapter lengths and pacing, keeping them similar to those in Echoes of the Forgotten.

This consistency ensures that readers experience a familiar flow, even as new plot twists and suspenseful moments arise. I also try to pace the chapters so that moments of calm are followed by intense revelations or action sequences, creating a natural ebb and flow that keeps readers on edge without overwhelming them.

6. Outlining the Plot While Leaving Room for Surprises

Plotting a series means planning far in advance, but it’s also essential to leave space for unexpected inspiration. Sometimes, new ideas emerge as I’m writing that fit perfectly into the existing plot but add layers I hadn’t initially considered.

My outline for Return of the Echoes consists of 22 chapters, each sketched out with key points, but I leave room within each chapter for creative twists and turns. This allows me to maintain the plot’s overall structure while keeping it flexible enough to adapt. My hope is that this mix of planning and spontaneity will keep the story cohesive and unpredictable, which is key to keeping readers invested.

7. Reflecting on Reader Feedback

Finally, one of the most valuable aspects of writing a series is the opportunity to respond to reader feedback. After Echoes of the Forgotten, I listened to what readers liked and noted what elements they were most curious about. This feedback helps shape Return of the Echoes, allowing me to incorporate more of what resonates with readers while staying true to the story I want to tell.

For instance, I’ve learned that many readers are particularly intrigued by the enigmatic Timekeepers and want more backstory about their role in Ash Hollow. In Return of the Echoes, I’ll be delving deeper into their history and influence on the town, answering some of those lingering questions while raising a few new ones to keep readers guessing.
